-Where do you reside and create? I am based in Tokyo, Japan.
-How would you describe Midori? Collage artist and graphic designer.
-Did you study Visual arts or is it inherent? I didn’t go to art school, but I wanted to be a graphic designer, so I studied design at university.
-How long have you been making art and what lead you to start? I have been making collages for about 20 years.
- How did you acquire your style? My favorite elements (art, fashion, music, movies, colors and eras) are reflected in the collages I create. And it naturally became my current style. However I like classical, pop, street, and many other things, so I don’t want to be bound by style.
-What is the inspiration behind your art? My biggest inspiration was the Russian avant-garde art that inspired me to start collage. Also Jacques Prevert, Czech avant-garde and Polish graphic design are my inspirations as well.
-Your pieces are intricate and time consuming what is the longest you have spent on one piece? Maximum 3 days. It was when I hollowed out a book and made a three-dimensional collage work.
-Do you work one or multiple pieces at once? When all the material are on my desk I can complete multiple works at the same time.
-Have you ever come across a piece of art that you could not or did not want to stop looking at? I am obsessed with the charm of gargoyles.
- Why make art? I call my work “My Home”. My feelings, emotions, thoughts, everything can be sublimated into a collage, and it’s just fun to make. And I don’t copy the materials, I use the actual paper as it is for collage, so when coincidences overlap and a good work is created, it’s a pleasure above all else.
