Gabriel Sancho

Interview by Jimon

-Where did you grow up, and where do you live currently?  I was living in Cordoba; Argentina for Ten years and now I am back in Buenos Aires, where I grew up.

-How would you describe Gabriel Sancho?  A person who is interested in too many things.

-Did you have any official training for being a cartoonist?  Zero official training.

-How did you acquire your style?  My modus operandi; It came up as a need, my drawing skills don’t limit my imagination.

-What is the origin of the writings in your cartoons?  Ideas come from everywhere. Sometimes I see clearly the images in my mind. Other times I play with ideas or words in my head for days until they have any sense. But mostly, I sit and start drawing with nothing in mind, so the result is a surprise for me too. Usually, my best work is made within five minutes of publishing.

-How do you describe success as a cartoonist?  I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I think that success is in touching people. It could be with a word, a story, a smile, a song, or a cartoon.

-What does Gabriel Sancho dream about?  I dream about finding the time and energy to overcome my insecurities and to take the last step needed to make my art bigger.

-Do people ask for permission before they tattoo your cartoons on their body or you just get a photo of the tattoo afterward?  Yes, they usually ask permission, and I ask permission for publishing them. Tattoos of my art on peoples bodies was an amazing surprise, it is an honor for me.

-How often people tattoo your work on their body?  This is something that is happening a lot lately and it’s on the rise since I get at least one a week.

-If a movie was to be made about your life, where would it ideally take place and who would be the actor playing your part? In a coffee store. No doubt, John Cusack.

-When you are not making cartoons where would someone find you? At my regular job. And if I am not there, you could find me with my books, cd`s and movies or killing my guitar.

-Best advice you ever received in regards to your career as a cartoonist?  Be constant. Don’t stop.

-What is your dream publication for your cartoons?  A book, obviously, but a dream place is a music album cover.

-Do you have a person/place/thing that you visit for inspiration?  When I have nothing to draw, music always helps.

-If you could have dinner with three artists, living/dead who would be at your table?  Three Davids: Lynch, Bowie and Foster Wallace.
