Andy Dixon

Interview by Jimon

-How would you describe Andy Dixon?Andy Dixon is a middle aged Canadian. He loves comedy, reality dating shows, and making things, particularly paintings. He loves removing well-known iconographs from their original contexts and placing them in new ones, kind of like what a music producer might do with a sample.

-Where do you reside and work currently?  Los Angeles

- Did you have any training for art or is it inherent?  I never went to art school. I’ve just kind of naturally been interested in making things since as far back as I can remember, which isn’t to say I had inherent talent – maybe just an inherent drive.

-You have a distinct style. What is the origin or inspiration behind your style?  I think it’s just from being interested in aesthetics at an early age, exploring what I think looks nice and what I think looks bad. Old Looney Toon background art, the colors of the American west coast, Rubens, Fauvism.

- Is there any reality behind your paintings or are they completely from imagination?  I can’t paint anything from imagination to save my life – I always work from references. I see myself as a kind of translator in that way. I developed my own language and it thrills me to simply translate various things into that language to see what happens.

-How much planning is involved in your paintings or are they purely spontaneous?  There is always a reference I’m working from so in one way things like subject and composition are completely planned. But the translating part of things happens spontaneously and in real time.

-Do you work on one painting at a time or multiple?  Generally I work on one painting at a time but every once in a while I’ll edit a piece I thought was finished while working on another.

- How do you describe success as an artist?  Being able to sleep at night feeling at least somewhat fulfilled with the work you’re making – but not so fulfilled that you’re not excited to do it again slightly better the next day.

-Tell us something about the art world that you want to see changed?  More playfulness.

-The future is _________.  Completely unknown.

- If you could have one of your pieces at any museum in the world, where would it be?  The Getty

-What is final thing you do in the studio before you call it a day/night?  Clean my brushes.

-If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table?  David Lynch, David Hockney, Carravaggio.

-Name three things you can’t live without in your studio?  Music, my temperature-controlled lamp, hair elastics.

-If you were asking the questions what question would you ask please follow up with an answer?

Now that you live in LA, have you started writing a movie script like a complete cliche? Answer: Yes.
