Midori

Interview by Jimon

1-Where do you reside and create?  I am based in Tokyo, Japan.

2-How would you describe Midori?  Collage artist and graphic designer.

3-Did you study Visual arts or is it inherent?  I didn’t go to art school, but I wanted to be a graphic designer, so I studied design at university.

4-How long have you been making art and what lead you to start?  I have been making collages for about 20 years.

5- How did you acquire your style?  My favorite elements (art, fashion, music, movies, colors and eras) are reflected in the collages I create. And it naturally became my current style. However I like classical, pop, street, and many other things, so I don’t want to be bound by style.

6-What is the inspiration behind your art?  My biggest inspiration was the Russian avant-garde art that inspired me to start collage. Also Jacques Prevert, Czech avant-garde and Polish graphic design are my inspirations as well.

7-Your pieces are intricate and time consuming what is the longest you have spent on one piece?  Maximum 3 days. It was when I hollowed out a book and made a three-dimensional collage work.

8-Do you work one or multiple pieces at once?  When all the material are on my desk I can complete multiple works at the same time.

9-Have you ever come across a piece of art that you could not or did not want to stop looking at?  I am obsessed with the charm of gargoyles.

10- Why make art?  I call my work “My Home”. My feelings, emotions, thoughts, everything can be sublimated into a collage, and it’s just fun to make. And I don’t copy the materials, I use the actual paper as it is for collage, so when coincidences overlap and a good work is created, it’s a pleasure above all else.

11-The future is _________?  Mysterious and strange.

12-What does a random day in your life look like, from start to finish?  Flows like music.

13. How do you define success?  A fantasy world that can’t be reached even if I keep trying.

14. Do you have a place/person/thing that you visit for inspiration?  Book stores and record stores are the most accessible and inspirational places. I also like fashion and watching fashion shows is another source of inspiration. And when I went to France, Italy and the Czech Republic, I got a lot of wonderful and precious inspiration.

15. If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table?  Jacques Prevert , Alexander Rodchenko , Joseph Cornell.
