1-Where did you grow up, and where do you live currently? I grew up in Villa Adelina, in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Argentina up until I was 26. Then I started wandering around Argentina and the UK. I currently live in North Wales, which is a place I absolutely love.
2-How would you describe Sofia Bonati? Artist and mum. I’m an anxious person and usually is hard to get to know me, but once you do I think I’m fun/funny. I love being in nature, specially the forest. I love picnics, baking and tea. I don’t like crowded places.
3–When did you first start making art and what lead you to start? I have been drawing and painting forever. Both my parents are artist so it was a common thing in my home. I decided to pursue a career after I had my first child. Because my free time during the day revolved around his naps.
4-Do you remember the first piece of art you created? How old where you? I think the first one was an oil landscape. I reproduced a Van Gogh painting when I was around 12. The first one I sold, though, was “Flora”. I think I did it was 2011 or 2012. She’s in Turkey now.
5-Did you have any training for your art or is it inherent? I didn’t have any formal training, I studied graphic design for about a year but I had to leave the university.
6-Your work consists of Illustration, Painting and drawing, which did you start with? Painting and drawing, back in Argentina I used to paint with oil and draw with pens and graphite pencil.
7-Best advice you ever received in regards to your art? Never stop practicing.
8-What influences you as an artist? Beautiful things, luckily I live in Wales, so there’s plenty of nature and colors to get motivated. Of course, other artist’s work as well.
9-Why make art? Because I love to. Many times I feel like I have the need of translating whatever thought/image/feeling I have in my mind into a piece of art.
10-What does Sofia Bonati dream about? I dream of being less anxious and more focused on the things I want or need to do.
11-When you are not making art where would someone find you? Probably with my children or doing house chores, they keep me occupied!
12-If you had to watch one movie on repeat for eternity, what movie would it be? Midnight in Paris.
13–First thing you think/do in the morning? And Last thing at night? Sadly, check my phone. At night I generally do some work in bed. In the mornings I wake up and pick my daughter from her cot.
14-What is your least favorite part of the day? Mornings, rush hour, getting everyone ready for school.
15-If you weren’t an artist, what would you have liked to be? Graphic designer or psychologist/ therapist.
16-The future is _________? Uncertain, hopefully better than last year and a half.
17-How do you describe success as an artist? Having the freedom to work on my art as much as I want or need, and feeling proud of what I’ve created.
18-Do you have a place/person/thing that you visit for inspiration? I live near Bodnant Garden in Conwy, it’s truly breathtaking.
19-If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table? Klimt, Quino and Gaudí
20-Name three things you can’t live whitout in your studio? Good light, no one around and mate (hot drink with yerba mate).
