Interview by Jimon
-Where do you currently reside and work? I live in Quatre-Bornes which is in the central region of Mauritius Island. I work and live here with my girlfriend and my son.
-How would you describe Gael Froget? An easy guy 🙂 But I am still figuring out the real answer.
-Did you attend an art school or is it inherent? I studied Fashion design where I was properly introduced to art but I am self taught.
-How long have you been making art and what lead you to start? I have been at it for 13 years! I started painting at age 21 when I consciously looked at a painting for the first time, it was a painting by Marilyn Manson.
-Is there any reality behind the characters you paint? Yes but they are more social portraits than personal ones.
-Have you ever come across a piece of art that you could not or did not want to stop looking at? A Mark Rothko entitled Black on Maroon I saw At the Tate Modern, I have never really bothered about his work until seeing one in real. It completely changed my perspective about art.
-Tell us something about the art world that you want to see changed? To be honest I don’t really know much or care about the art world. Maybe more art and less art world.
-Why make art? It’s like looking at your brain and emotions in the mirror, lots of fun!
-The future is _________?Better or bitter.
-What advice would you give putative collectors? If an artist has two mansions, one jet, ten cars and five assistants he probably doesn’t give a shit about his art, why would you?
-What’s the best advice you’ve ever received in regards to your art? Don’t rush, let time and life do its work.
-How do you define success? When you see a successful painting you just know it, I think it applies to everything else in life.
-Do you have a place/person/thing that you visit for inspiration? Anyone and anything around me inspires me, I don’t go seek it, I sit patiently and wait.
-If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table? I’d pick only one and have a  “tête à tête” with late Malcolm de Chazal great Mauritian thinker, writer and painter.
-Name three things you can’t live without in your studio? My old crappy bluetooth speakers, some fresh acrylic paint and soft drinks.
-How would someone find you on Social Media? Instagram @gaelfroget
