Interview by Jimon
-Where do you reside and work currently? I live in the Blue Mountains NSW Australia and my studio is in my backyard.
-One word to describe Harold David? Lovely
-How long have you been making art and what lead you to start? I have been making art since 4th grade. I had this fab. free thinking teacher in Detroit named Ms. Spoor. She was a great inspiration and taught us how to think outside of the box!
-Do you remember the first piece of art you created? How old where you? A painting of Donna Summer using my mums nail polishes. About 11 years old.
-How did you acquire your style? I don’t know. Things rub off. Growing up in Detroit in the 60’s and 70’s impacted me hugely. I am also incredibly impatient so that has something to do with it as well. I also don’t feel attached to physical objects in this realm.
-You work in multiple platforms. Which one is your favorite? Painting.
-Which do you prefer, film or digital? Film.
-Are the colors in your art indicative of your state of mind? I am down to certain combinations of color. Not sure why but I just am.
-What has the most influence on your work? The unknown.
-How do you define success? If you’re passionate about what you’re doing then you are successful. Beyond that, its all relative.
-Who is your favorite artist? Robert Rauschenberg.
-How would you like to be seen as an artist years from now? That I pushed boundaries and moved way beyond technique.
-What impact would you like to see from your work? That judgement is futile and that the line between good and bad is bullshit.
-Do you have a place/person/thing that you visit for inspiration? My friend Poet/Sculpture Phil Hammiel 84 years old and a native of Detroit living in the Blue Mts.
-If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table? Lucien Freud, Marina Abramovic, Hilma af Klint.
-Three things you can’t live without in your studio? Paint, Pegboard, Pixies.
-How would someone find you on social media? Insta: harolddavidstudio
